The GLUT1 Deficiency Foundation is a nonprofit family organization dedicated to improving lives in the GLUT1 Deficiency community through increased awareness, improved education, advocacy for patients and families, and support and funding for research. The G1DF is organized and led by parents who have a vision to make GLUT1 Deficiency easy to diagnose early, treat effectively, and cure completely.

The GLUT1 Deficiency Foundation Board of Directors proactively seeks applications from professional and committed individuals who have an interest in serving in this critically important role to govern the G1DF well today and ensure it is prepared to serve the community well into in the future.  It is our goal to represent a broad range of diverse experiences in our leadership, and we are so grateful to those who are willing to step forward to be part of the leadership team.

The purpose of the application is to seek out ideal candidates for future board service as part of our strategic plan and succession planning. These applications will enable the current GLUT1 Deficiency Foundation Board of Directors to survey interest from the community and when vacancies occur to use the information to make an informed decision and vote on which candidate(s) would serve the organization best.

service details

  • To serve on the Board of Directors, current G1DF bylaws specify you must be an individual with GLUT1 Deficiency or the spouse, parent/guardian, or other family member of the individual.
  • All Board of Director roles are volunteer positions.
  • Terms are 3 years with a maximum of 3 total terms.
  • Applicants can serve from anywhere in the United States.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

The GLUT1 Deficiency Foundation wants passionate, dependable, and dedicated individuals to serve as stewards of the Foundation and its mission. Members of the Board of Directors provide fiscal, legal, and management oversight of all G1DF activities and set the tone of the organization to help it represent and serve the community to its full potential.

Each board member has basic legal duties:

  • Duty of Care – participate actively in making decisions on behalf of the organization and to exercise best judgment when doing so.
  • Duty of Loyalty - put the interests of the organization before their personal and professional interests when acting on behalf of the organization in a decision-making capacity. The organization’s needs come first.
  • Duty of Obedience – bear the legal responsibility of ensuring the organization complies with all applicable laws and adheres to its mission.

Legal and Ethical Responsibilities and Expectations:

  • ensure legal compliance and ethical integrity of all aspects of governance and conduct
  • abide by the Bylaws of the G1DF (link here)
  • abide by the Conflict of Interest policy (link here)
  • disclose any conflicts of interest as it pertains to your board position and sign an annual conflict of interest agreement (link here)
  • maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of the G1DF
  • maintain confidentiality on any information where the G1DF is contractually bound not to disclose it 
  • maintain confidentiality of the private information of the organization, staff, other board members, and the individuals in the community we serve
  • maintain professionalism and courtesy in social media communications and abide by the G1DF Social Media Policy (link here)
  • maintain professionalism and courtesy in email communications and abide by the G1DF Email Communication Policy (link here)
  • maintain professionalism with industry and avoid inappropriate influence by abiding by the G1DF Guidelines for Commercial Engagement (link here)
  • refrain from providing medical or legal advice
  • report improper activities in accordance with the G1DF Whistleblower Policy (link here)

Financial Responsibilities and Expectations:

  • give a personally meaningful financial donation and/or participate in at least one fundraising event 
  • assist the board in its fiduciary responsibilities by faithfully reading and understanding the G1DF’s financial statements and standing
  • ensure effective fiscal controls and accountability
  • engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for the G1DF to fulfill its mission
  • approve and monitor the annual budget

Management and Engagement Responsibilities and Expectations:

  • fully understand and support the mission and vision of the G1DF
  • serve as an active advocate and ambassador for the G1DF and the GLUT1 Deficiency community
  • bring personal and professional expertise and that of others to support the mission of the G1DF
  • steer a clear course towards the G1DF mission by setting goals, objectives, vision
  • respect and support others within the board, organization, and the GLUT1 Deficiency community through collaboration, coordination, and cooperation
  • understand the programs and resources of the G1DF
  • understand and fulfill the expectations, activities, responsibilities, and requirements of your service commitment
  • develop policies, procedures, and regulations
  • understand and abide by the G1DF’s existing policies
  • actively engage in the GLUT1 Deficiency community by participating in fundraisers, public events, projects, and programs
  • be an active participant in the community to better understand needs
  • stay up-to-date on current developments and trends in the GLUT1 Deficiency research and patient community
  • serve and actively participate on at least one committee
  • hire, supervise, and evaluate the Executive Director
  • work collaboratively with the Executive Director and other employees of the G1DF
  • fulfill commitments within agreed upon deadlines
  • provide appropriate notice of resignation to the President of the Board of Directors if, at any time, you are unable to fulfill the commitments as a board member.
