Family Stories – Barista Sofia

Sofia is a 15 year old young lady living with Glut1 Deficiency. She was diagnosed when she was 3 years old. She lives in Katy, Texas and enjoys taking Taekwondo classes and spending time with friends and family. Her favorite subjects in school are social studies and choir, and she doesn’t really have a least favorite subject because she likes them all!

One thing she’d like everyone to know about living with Glut1 is that she thinks it is good because she likes all of her Glut1 friends, but it is also hard because she cannot eat everything everybody else eats.

This year has brought an amazing learning experience for Sofia and we wanted to share with the community. She has been learning to be a barista at a new coffee shop in downtown Katy called Active Coffee Shop. It opened a few months ago and the owners are just wonderful human beings. They offered her the opportunity to learn to make coffee and learn everything it entails to work at a coffee shop. The experience has been an incredible one for Sofia and her whole family. 

Her parents share that Sofia has become more confident and independent, and it has also helped her to socialize with other young girls working there who are very sweet and friendly. She is really happy and proud of what she does at the coffee shop, and her family is really happy for her and grateful to the owners and all the people who work there.

Sofia said she likes to go to the coffee shop and really enjoys working there because she likes seeing her new friends. In the future, Sofia would love to have a medicine for Glut1 so she can eat everything she wants.
