Hello Glut1 Community!

This time I would like to share with you a recent publication on the artificial sweetener erythritol, the name of the publication is: The artificial sweetener erythritol and cardiovascular event risk.

This publication was featured by CNN and other news media outlets and talks about studies done to examine the possible role of long term use of erythritol in risk of cardiovascular disease. According to the lead scientist of the study, more studies need to be done to assess the long-term safety of erythritol. However, since the standard care of treatment for patients with Glut1 Deficiency is a medically supervised ketogenic diet therapy, and many of the patients in our community might use some of the keto products which may contain erythritol and are available in different grocery stores or online, we wanted to make you aware of this publication.

Our goal is not to raise alarms, but to inform you and make you aware of this publication so that if you are concerned, you can share it with the medical team caring for your Glut1 patient and you can ask for their advice.

Additionally, I would like to share with you a second publication entitled: Effects of Sweeteners on the Gut Microbiota: A Review of Experimental Studies and Clinical Trials. This is a very thorough review about many different types of sweeteners including synthetic, natural, and nutritive sweeteners. This is a publication you could also share with your medical team in case you are interested.

If you have any questions or concerns about these publications, please reach out to your medical team.
